May the 4th send you CD keys

     Yesterday (as of writing) was May 4th, or Star Wars day. Far be it a national holiday or anything of like, but it is a day for fans to be fans. A day to appreciate Star Wars that much more. Steam too. appreciates the day, reducing the price of the Star Wars Bundle 2014 to a very enticing $33. This was a deal too good to pass up, and from the looks of it, many thousands of people partook in the bundle, or parts of it. Arguably the best Star Wars game to date is BattleFront II. This game is included in the bundle, barring one issue. CD keys. Apparently there is not enough. The game sold so well, steam ran out of keys to give.
     This itself is an interesting event, a digital game running out of copies. This is something I had never thought possible. I always found the CD key system integrated into third party steam titles a bit abrasive, but this is another level. I am not upset, or even sad, this is just mindbogglingly interesting to me. In a new landscape of gaming culture where digital reigns, boasting countless benefits over a physical copy, one of the most resounding advantages- the lack of the restraints of a hard copy- has... run out.
     This is not Steam's fault, nor is it the publisher of the game. A quick glance at the community page would see you inundated with requests and petitions for new keys. Every comment passing and placing blame on Steam. I understand their anger, however unfounded. No party is to blame for this, for this is unheard of, at least to me. I sit on my PC, fresh out of a Star Wars Marathon, longing for my personal key to arrive. The same feeling as a purchased disc online being shipped to me. Waiting, excitment growing for my game to arrive, or at least, the key.
     In conclusion, foreseeing this kind of consumer desire for such a very old game is not expected. By this point in time most have gotten the game and had their fill. Accounting for this sudden influx on such an aged game would be a power only a Jedi could posses. There is nothing to be done but to wait, wait for the keys to be synthesized and arrive. Wait and wonder at the pure oddity of this situation.
